JSending Flowers to America will be an important regional reference for years to come.UST RELEASED: Sending Flowers to America: We're pleased to present our newest work, a 288-page, full-color, hardbound book about the people who grew the Los Angeles Flower Market and the floral industry in Southern California and for decades supplied the entire nation with fresh flowers. This important book was commissioned to Wordpix by the Los Angeles Flower Market. Wordpix acted as project manager/producer and is taking book orders. The intimate family stories that follow the chronological history make Sending Flowers very special. More than 60 stories are included, along with 354 photos, some from as far back as 1885. BIZNEWS: NEW BUSINESS AWAITS YOU

Generating Business in Tough Times - Everyone knows "times are tough," but there's plenty of business for the business owner who steps outside the box and employs some unique approaches. We picked up a few at a recent meeting of the Self Employed Alliance (SEA):

  • Listen to your clients: What is it they really want from you? Build loyalty by fulfilling needs.

  • Follow-up on all inquiries and in a timely manner.

  • When you follow up, offer something else of value that the inquiring person may not have realized you can do for them; or an incentive for giving you their business.

  • Publish a helpful booklet (or a set of booklets or fact sheet) about your areas of expertise. Offer these free tips to those you meet and those who inquire of your services. This helps to position you as someone who knows the business.

  • Interview your potential customer. Ask questions so you can determine their real goal and see how you can help them meet it.

  • Respond quickly and willingly to customers' requests. Be there when you are needed.

  • Stay in touch with your customers by phone, newsletter, ezine. Drop by when you're in the neighborhood, invite them to coffee, keep the lines of communication open and let them know you continue to work for them.

What have you tried that works for you? We'd like to know. Give us a call or send an email to The Wordpix Team.

IN THE WORKS at Wordpix. Our new website for the floral community, a Wordpix venture, is up and it's not just for florists! It's a classified ads site that anyone can use at any time - to find something or sell something. As long as it's in the introductory phase (that may last a year or more!) we're giving the ads away. That's right - place an ad at no cost. So check it out - www.myfloralads.com - and don't be fooled by the word Floral, it's for everyone. DIGITAL NATIVE
DOES SURFING MAKE YOU "SMARTER?
" Results of a recent UCLA study by Gary Small show that the process of reading lights up certain areas of the brain. Even more significant, the process of surfing the Web shows TWICE the activity in the regions of the brain responsible for complex reasoning and decision-making. Internet surfing appears to engage more neural networks in the brain. - Parade, 11/16/08
Obama_maskJust For Fun: Do Halloween Masks Predict Who Will Win an Election? They did in the 2008 General Election as Internet retailers reported that masks of presidential candidate Barack Obama outsold those of John McCain just before Halloween. Sales of masks of presidential candidates have predicted the winner in several election years. Now that's a scary thought!
OF INTEREST: The CAPTCHA:  Every wondered why some websites require you to type that weird little set of characters when you're signing up or logging in? That's called a "captcha" and it's a test that tells the system an honest-to-gosh real person is logging in. It's meant to reduce spam and thwart the automated use of Web forms.
ALERT: THEY WANT YOUR WEB DOMAIN: Did you recently get an email suggesting you should register certain domain names (web addresses) similar to your own? Or trying to convince you to "login" to update your web domain account? This is the illegal practice of Phishing. In most instances, the sender is attempting to learn your login so they can steal your domain from you. If you're not sure whether a solicitation is legit or not, forward a copy to Wordpix and we'll attempt to research it for you.

"STAYCATIONS" HIGHLY POPULAR NOW: One person's loss is another's gain, or so they say. The airline industry suffers as people save their hard-earned dollars and reduce long distance travel; but the activities we enjoy at home may have realized a bit of a regeneration over the past summer as consumers spent more time gardening and remodeling. Staying home for vacations has led to the newly coined "staycation".
WHAT'S TO KNOW?
COMPUTER TIPS IN A NUTSHELL:
Sometimes the smallest little tricks can be very powerful. Here's one that saves time AND money: When you want to print only a portion of an email or web page, simply highlight the area you really want printed, then go to File, Print and choose Selection. You'll spend a lot less on paper and will get your printed information more quickly.

Want to send a large file to someone? Afraid it's going to jam up your email system (or the recipient's system)? Check out this free third party service at: www.yousendit.com
